Reverend William George Mattis

March 2, 1929 — February 15, 2024

Brooksville

Reverend William Mattis, 94, of Brooksville FL passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, February 15, 2024.  He was born in Fitchburg MA on March 2, 1929 to parents George and Cleopatra Mattis. Reverend Mattis is survived by his wife Mary (Pavlides) Mattis, his son George Mattis and his wife Cherie, along with grandchildren William and Juliann Mattis.  He was proceeded in death by daughter Alexandra “Sandy” Mattis.

Reverend Mattis was a dedicated servant to God who was ordained a priest in June of 1984 after a decorated career with the Department of Transportation.  As a priest, Reverend Mattis was active until his passing and served at various parishes throughout the New England states, Florida, and Sheboygan WI.  He had a profound impact on those he met with his compassion, sense of humor, quick wit, and love of life and the people around him.  Wherever he was asked to serve, he was always welcomed and well-remembered.  In addition to serving at various parishes throughout the states, he was elated to be part of a clerical contingent that went to Albania to reestablish Orthodoxy to the country after over 40 years of communist repression. For the village from which his parents descended (Haskovo), in the late 1980s he celebrated the first Easter service in over 40 years and continued to do so for several years afterwards. During his career, he enjoyed multiple pilgrimages which was highlighted by places such as the Holy Lands and Mt. Athos.  Wherever he went and whoever he met, he was always able to incorporate his extensive life experiences into his wonderful sermons and stories.
